New-Numbers
The Continuum

Nothing and everything
The endless void fills all time
Until…

One moves in the silence
Stretching and reaching
Towards the other as Two
Swiftly take flight.

They mingle and join
Each claiming their own side
So Three may point the way.
Each base stretched far and wide.

Foundations are laid
By another close at hand
Who opens the Four sealed Gates.
Disruption and creative force
Issues forth as the skillfully crafted
Shield of focus reflects the Five.

The light is fixed
The seeker is found
As outpour of healing grace
Gives way to the
Harmonious Six.

Each walks a path of experience
Pulling and gathering from
Vista’s extremes.
Wisdom and lessons hard won
Fill what moves within.

As Six expands to become Seven
The meandering web that
Connects becomes entwined.
A continuum of dual
Portal opening and Eight
The final climax of force contained.

Like amoebas they move and
Wiggle and stretch and pull
And strain until the
Tension and release
Catapult them over
The initiatory threshold of
Death’s Nine Gates.

All scatter and disperse
Once again seamlessly
Part of the void of the All
Until…

Once again the singular One rises
Reaching out towards its
Newly quickened mate.

Numerology is the study of numbers, and the mystical manner in which they reflect the specific energies wherever they are put to application. In the interpretation of an individual the numbers of the birth date, name or other auspicious dates indicate certain aptitudes and characteristic tendencies. When we use numerology to calculate the optimal time for a magickal working or spiritual event, we can access the energy of the day/date and harness it in direction towards what we wish to manifest. I use numerology frequently to eek out more information that can be used to give greater insight to what that day may hold as potential.

When using names rather than numbers to make a determination, each letter has a numeric value that provides a related cosmic vibration ( look at the end of the post for letter values). The sum of the numbers in your birth date and the sum of value derived from the letters in the name provide an interrelation of vibrations. These numbers show a great deal about character, purpose in life, what motivates, and where talents may lie. Experts in numerology use the numbers to determine the best time for major moves and activities in life. Numerology is used to decide when to invest, when to marry, when to travel, when to change jobs, or relocate.

Pythagoras, the Greek mathematician who lived from 569-470 B.C., is said by many to be the originator of much of what we call numerology today. Although, if we look back at the emphasis placed on the relationship and mystical energy of numbers related to the Kabbalah(Qabalah), we see that the use of numerology in some form dates back to being a very ancient art of interpretation.

Almost every counting system in the world is based upon the numbers 1 through 9. Each of those digits has its own particular meaning. Numerology is the method of reducing names and dates to special numbers that reveal character, quality and cycles of the person or thing being examined. It is a method we use to find the strengths and lessen the frustration of the limitations of our weaknesses.

The Process of determining the number(s) for evaluation is done by the method of reducing the given numbers to a single digit. For example one of my daughter’s birth date is March 20.1990. To calculate her birth number the process would look like this:

March = 3 (month) + 2+0 (day) + 1+9+9+0
Add all of the numbers together = 24
Reduce it to a single number = 2+4 = 6

6 is the number I would use as their birth number and I would base my interpretation on the dynamics and energies of the number “6”. Simple, huh!

The Basic Interpretation of the Numbers 0-9:

0 Cycles, void, the limitless ALL, womb of creation and the Gate of the Divine
1 The singular “I”, the individual, the line of continuum, energy held and gathered back to itself
2 Collaborative effort- moving beyond the “I” to “we”- duality and polarity that results
3 The point of trinity or third that is created from the friction and combined effort of the two
4 Opening the point of support to a place of foundation, equanimity and force in a balanced state
5 The shield whose tip may be directed by Will to disrupt, change and set in motion
6 Doubled trinity, intersecting energies of descent and ascent, mirrored image of creative product
7 Carrying forward the lessons learned, the paths taken and the reconvening of the triune
8 The lemniscate, foundation (4) uplifted to become the container, receipt and release
9 Threshold /gate to endings and completion with potential for new fully in-formed beginnings

Practical Application

A Little July 4th Fun: The Numerology

July 4

In the United States, July 4th is a holiday celebrating independence and freedom. I would like to use these two words as keywords for the day regardless of where you are located in the World.

The numerology of the day (this year) is: 9
July = 7 (month) + 4 (day) + 2+0+1+4 (year) = 18 = 1+8 = 9

The number – 9 – relates to endings that make way for new beginnings, thresholds of new experience and maximum opportunity for transformation and change. Let’s apply the energy of a nine day to the themes of independence and freedom. This is my personal declaration for the day:

I will initiate change in my perceptions of the freedom I allow myself to open fully to all of my spiritual practices. I will change the dependence I have on other’s opinions of my personal growth and declare my state of independence to appreciate my self-created magick. I will allow this freedom of “will to change” to be the catalyst that brings new life to my spiritual path. And, I will freely give of my renewed and transformed self as I step through the gates of newly informed potential, bursting forth in the light of my victory in claiming the freedom to be the best me possible.

Salty water flows gently
Over glistening white sand.

Moon Maiden coyly veils
Her face in the dark
Mask of a star filled night.

I push my toes deeper into
Star lit beach and look
Out at the vastness of
Ocean’s rising waters.

I push myself deeper into
Star-filled body of mine
Looking out at the vastness
Of emotions that seek me out.

I stand within the space of
Eternity and the promise of
Moon Maiden’s quickening kiss.

The waters of healing surround
Lifting me gently from my
Place of digging deeply into
The changing sands of time.

I surrender to the place
Of my celestial home as
Maiden Moon lifts her veil
Of darkness and fills me with
The tides of her waxing Light.

Working with the Moon and her phases are part of the natural cycle that is used in the Craft of the Witch. We draw from the energy of the Goddess as represented in her archetypal forms of Maiden, Mother and Crone and see these in manifest form as New, Full and Dark Moons.

With all the diverse energy and mystery surrounding the Moon is it any wonder that its greater mysteries are used to enhance sacred work. Dancing around a fire on a moon lit night, moving to the beat of drums is the nearest one can come to being totally absorbed into the Natural world. When we begin a new journey through the cycle and flow of Lunar energy, we mark the cycles of these changes within ourselves by the works of magick and offerings of devotion we express. Although the focus may be that of the Moon, we must also consider the energy of Her polarized opposite, the Sun. Each cycle brings their own specificity to the day or the month and both are ever present in our cycle of time on this planet. If we also work with the energy of the planets, a rite held on a MO(o)N-day would correspond with the energy of the Moon and any moon phase in the astrological sign of Cancer would add additional lunar energy as Cancer’s planetary ruler is the MOON.

In the greater wheel of the Lunar Year we move through the astrological signs of the zodiac, each offering key points of unity and synthesis (New Moon) or opposition and productive change (Full Moon) in accord with the astrological energy of the Solar year. What this means is that for any given New Moon (with rare exception) it will be in the same astrological sign as that of the Sun (Solar Month). For instance, we are currently in the Solar Month of Cancer and today’s New Moon is also in the astrological sign of Cancer. This gives a double boost to any workings that benefit from application of Cancer’s energies because the heart (Moon) and will (Sun) are working in a synthesized way. By the time the Moon reaches it Full phase, the Moon has moved into the sign directly opposite (with rare exception) that of the Sun. So the upcoming Full Moon in July will be in the astrological sign of Capricorn, which is directly opposite that of the Sun, still in Cancer. The opportunity here is one of productive tension that launches a new state from the friction. Best example, husband and wife fight, come to an agreement and the make-up sex is great!

Now, this is not to say that you can’t keep the Esbats (Moon Rituals) simple and effective. Everyone is not versed in astrology, nor do they care to be. That’s fine. Knowing the astrology and any other layer of compatible magickal system enhances what is essentially quite effective in its simplicity. It is during these ceremonies and rituals that we seek to connect with the energies of the moon, her phases and the gifts that each brings. These rituals would include: Rites of Healing – Divination and Rites of New Growth and deeper awareness.

The Phase of the Moon and Tides of Lunar Magick

Moon Phase Basics:

The Waxing Moon is the time between the New Moon and the Full Moon.

The Waning Moon is the time between the Full Moon and the last day of the last quarter- just prior to the New Moon.

Although Magickal working can be done at any time, there are specific times during the lunar cycle when your workings can be enhanced. One of the first considerations is what type of energy you want to use for your intent.

The waxing of the moon, from New to Full, provides a crescendo or building effect and the waning of the moon from peak of Full to the subsequent New Moon allows for release and diminishing of energetic effect.

In addition to the cycle of Waxing and Waning, there are three phases of the moon that are typically used for magickal working. These are the New – Full and Dark Moons. They are likened to the Triplicity of the Goddess as Maiden – Mother and Crone:

NEW MOON – The Maiden

The New Moon is a time of beginnings and first seeds towards growth. New projects, goals and behaviors are all supported when given focus during this time.

The New Moon is the beginning of the cycle of increased flow and dynamics. It embodies the Goddess as the Maiden. Full, fertile and ripe with creative outpour and though lacking the experience of the Crone, has more than enough enthusiasm to seek out the many paths that could be taken. It is to some degree the allowance of nature taking its course, directed towards a goal of productive manifestation. It is the yearning and desire that is inherent in the Maiden that will attract to Her that which she desires most. And, it is this energy, which if with intention and correct thought is set into motion during this phase will blossom with the waxing of the Moon.

Magickal workings would include:

* Beginnings of any new endeavor
* Fresh starts at old projects/pursuits
* Dedications to a new pursuit
* The first steps towards a specific goal

FULL MOON – The Mother

The Full Moon is the peak and product of all efforts begun at the New Moon. Additionally, any working that needs extra oomph, magnification or energetic boost, will benefit from Full Moon energy.

The Full Moon embodies the energies of the Goddess as the Mother. She is the giver of life and the nurturer and guardian that ensures that that life will be productive, fruitful and at the apex of whatever endeavor is undertaken. The expansive light of the Full Moon shines upon all under its sway and the dynamics of ebb and flow are at their most potent. Energy exchanges with energy and movement and expansion occurs bringing the highest possible outcome for all that it touches. The energy of the Full Moon causes things to happen and therefore is neither stagnant nor still in its outpour.

Magickal workings would include:

* Acknowledging achievement made towards goal
* Taking action to bolster the strengths gained
* Completion of a working
* Synthesizing action between two goals of intent

DARK MOON – The Crone

The span of time from completion of Full moon, up to and including approximately 3 days prior to the next New Moon is the optimal time for release, cutting away and inner preparation. These 3 days prior to the next New Moon are also known as the Dark Moon phase.

The Dark Moon embodies the Hidden nature, that if embraced in the fullness of the dark reveals what may lay beneath the surface waiting to be used and transformed. This is the Goddess as the Crone. She holds nothing back, invites you to look at the truth of your own reflection and then demands that you release what serves no purpose and what hinders your growth. She carries the wisdom that has grown through experience and she knows the secrets of the darkest of places and holds within the Light that illumines those who have courage to enter.

Using the energy of the Dark Moon is to call upon the reserves of knowing that are contained within what it is you seek to release. This is a time for culling, pruning and preparing for the upcoming New Moon where what is viable may be planted anew, with greater understanding of the process that ensures success.

Magickal workings would include:

* Uncovering what holds you back
* Releasing a negative habit or energy
* Uncovering your shadow nature
* Healing and removal of blockages

In practice, how could you make the most of these phases? Suppose I want to seek new employment…..

On the New Moon, I may do a meditation, plan, brainstorm and journal about the type of work I may wish to acquire. I may even, physically plant a few seeds in a pot as concrete visual symbols of my intent. Each day thereafter I will tend the seeds- mentally and/or physically- enriching them with more concrete ideas and goals for obtaining my ideal work. On the Full Moon, I will give thanks for the new growth in my life towards my goal. Perhaps do a meditation, visualizing in as much detail as possible my future work surroundings, myself enjoying and looking forward to each day, etc. And, finally as the moon wanes and the days prior to the next New moon approach, I spend some time identifying and releasing any negative thoughts, words or actions that are preventing me from bringing into manifest reality my goal. This release may take any form as long as the symbolic or actual release is something you can strongly connect with, and is of harm to none. This or a similar cycle may need to be repeated several lunations, depending on your goal, the strength of your focus and intent and ability to truly release that which may be holding you back.

Adding the Astrological Component

Today the Moon is New in the astrological sign of Cancer and opportunity abounds for work that connects you more deeply to what you feel and those things that offer the comfort of home and the loyalty of unconditional love. If you would like to learn more about how to use the energy of the Moon phases and fine-tune them to resonate specifically with the energy of the Zodiac please consider following The Temple of the Cosmic Spheres blog. The kick-off was a month of daily writings that highlighted the expression of the Moon and Her phases as she transited through each of the astrological signs during a Lunar month.

The night is warm and I stand facing the lingering light, thick and strong in its final hold. I think on all that has brought me to this point of the Great Wheel and call to myself the memories of lessons learned and places filled with burgeoning light that I have nurtured and cultivated as my Inner Sun waxed to fullness. Each memory is illuminated from within and I feel the heat of my Inner Sun flaring out from center’s core; extending light filled streams of connection to each treasured sensation and image so that all may see the product of my efforts……

Waning Light

spring_flowers_with_bee_clipart

Midsummer calls to you saying
Awaken and revel in the day as
My light stretches long and bright
Before night crowds greedily in.

Draw back the curtains that
Shroud the hidden spaces
Of your mind and heart.

Midsummer’s sun will light
The way before retreat into the dark.

Breathe in the scent of life
Ripe and full bursting forth.
Let it intoxicate and enchant
As daylight persistently lingers.

Midsummer’s sun will quicken
The way before all withers falling into the dark.

Step into waters warmed long and
Filled with sunlight’s waxing grace.
Emotions are enlivened for the imminent
Sacrifice of daylight’s harvest bounty.

Midsummer’s sun will set ablaze
The way before heart turns within to face the dark.

Clothe yourself in sunflower and bee
Drinking deeply from the nectar of
Sun Lord and Lady’s golden orb.

Midsummer’s sun will be your lantern
As you surrender to the dark.

Midsummer calls to you saying
Awaken from your slumber
Lift the veil of shaded cover
And step out into the blessed gift
Of the final waxing of Sun-filled
Solstice Light.

Hail and Welcome to the Summer Solstice! Hail and Welcome to the Fullness of the Sun’s Light! Hail and Welcome to the Blaze of Our Inner Sun! Hail and Welcome to the Light We Have Become!

Today and Saturday will be the longest days of the Solar Year (15hrs and 38mins). The Summer Solstice officially occurs on Saturday, but we can gather today’s energy as preparation for the outpouring of the Noonday Sun. There are many ways to celebrate the Solstice and each has the cyclical underpinnings of strengthening and re-affirming the Light. Bonfires, the reclaiming of power of the Holly King from the Oak King, the fullness of the Mother Goddess, the power of the Solar Father or simply remaining outside longer and marking the setting of the Sun and the beginning of the Waning year are tools of our connection to this auspicious day.

From Beltane’s pleasures of late Spring, we find ourselves drawn to the longer days that have been gradually moving towards the apex of this day of the longest hours of light. We feel ourselves emerging into the fullness of this Light filled with the realized potential and life sustaining energy of the sun. We are infused with its power and take pleasure in opening our senses to the full experience of being lit from within and shining that magick on all we encounter. This is the center of our focus and we cling to the last vestiges of daylight before the cycle moves towards the waning time.

And, it is from this place of extreme that we drink in all of the light we able to hold to carry us forward in the days and months ahead, knowing they will bring increasingly shorter hours of daylight and longer times of nightscape. This absorption of the catalytic fires will be the fuel that will burn throughout the months ahead as we move into the space of darkness, cold and introspection and become the lantern of that light.

I usually craft a personal working for the solstices and the equinoxes using the solar energies as the continuous energetic thread. Each of the workings I do serves to enliven and increasingly strengthen the solar current. It is this current that I use for energetic protocol and workings. And, it is this current that supports the lunar work that I do. In this way, I maintain the tools that are needed so that I may remain in sync with the energetic tides that flow around me and have as my foundation the Inner Sun that will Light the way.

In Honor of Erato

Heart beats wildly with
Each approaching step
As anticipation of loving union
Creates images of satisfied longing.

Breath comes in shallow flow
As my lover pulls me near and
Skin tingles in response to whispered
Words of love that are heated by desire.

Breath hot and sweet
Comes in rapid wave as…..

The Love of Erato

hermit2
Step out through the archway
Come out boldly into the light
The world of the living awaits you
Let its beauty fill your sight.

You’ve poured over great
Books and practiced all alone
Now time is approaching to
Share what has been shown.

To make noise and create joy
To dance freely and deeply feel
To cry and rant and rave as you
Strive to keep it authentic and real.

The truth is that Spirit and matter
Are fed each by the other one
And the deeper you reach into
All aspects of being human
Your Spirit will soar in exaltation
Having resolved this life’s lesson of
Living Divinely and Human as one.

The poem last week was a reflection of my own recent work at finding the balance between the life of the Hermit I am most comfortable with and the need to process through living experience those things I am akin to found in books and writings. Now, let me clarify before I go further that the life of the Hermit I refer to is that of my natural spiritual tendency, not the reality of living the life of a Hermit apart from the world. Nonetheless, the questions I posed last week hold particular relevance for me…

What beautifully crafted spaces have you built to keep you at arms length from the world?

For me, the detachment from the mundane has arisen in my approach to how I choose to experience all of the world and its messiness. In fact, for most of my life I have been fully and responsibly present in the physical state and happily retreating as often as I could to the more solitary musings and surroundings. Having five children, a husband, a full-time job, a coven and an avocation of service, teaching and writing tends to throw you head first into those deep waters of mundane responsibility and interaction. Yet, despite all of this, the Will is a crafty and powerful ally in allowing you to remain submerged in the waters of study, magickal practice and spiritual pursuit.

My inner library and working space of magick is vast and silent save for my own musings. This is the place of my power and retreat from what I consider trivial and non-productive in the mundane world. The urgency to know as much as possible, be as skilled as possible and align all aspects of myself as soon as possible has helped me craft this Hermit’s refuge with singular and sole purpose. The problem is that imbalance begins to occur. Although perceived great strides are being made in the spiritual work, the mundane polarity of that work suffers from lack of attention. The stores of experience that nurture, heal and support the needs of the human aspect within you become depleted. And, without those stores to be drawn upon when times become challenging and the call to spiritual support drains that reserve there is no healing possible.

How has it effected your Magick?

I have come to realize that I am not alone in this way of thinking and approach to spiritual work. We get caught up in the pursuit of growth and goals of practice and forget the primary tool that allows us to pursue what we seek. We neglect the “fun” aspect in deference to the academia. And are not always as mindful as we should be of the human factor in the energy work we do and how euphoric the simple acts of dancing, loving, listening and engaging in tactile creativity can be.

So, for now I will leave the Hermit behind; knowing that the road back to that place of contemplative and solitary spirituality is always available to and welcoming of me. For now, I will try a new road that leads back into the heart of humanity and all that being human means. This will be the scaffolding that will sure up my physical form, nurturing what needs replenishing of simple or challenging pursuits that are purely in the joy or pain of the moment.

I end where I began with the posing of two questions:

What beautifully crafted spaces have you built within the world to be fully present?

And, how has this effected your Magick?

a-knock-at-the-door
Image: Matthew Stewart

I sat alone within the walls I had built
Content, secure and at peace with the world.

I breathed the air of my own solemn exhalation
Feeling quite at home in this place of retreat.

Books lined shelves and whispered their tales as I slept
The rapture of each one’s journey my food and sustenance.

Night and day wove one into the other seamlessly and
This shroud of mystery held me willingly in its grasp.

Days and years passed without a nod of recognition
So enthralled was I by the seeking of knowledge arcane.

All that I had drawn into myself and sought to claim
Was etched by life’s sculpting upon the walls I had built.

Faces looking out with watchful and soul-filled lonely eye seeking
Others to break the spell and knock upon the door of my sanctuary.

All that I had drawn into myself and sought to claim now cried
Out in loneliness as the memory of my place in the world took hold.

I breathed out a sigh of exhalation as I waited in silence
Now assured in the fear that none other would come near.

I breathed out in surrender to my self designed fate
That had caused me to forget the simple joys of the mundane.

In the quiet return of inhaled breath a gentle knocking
Echoed within the walls I had built and upon my door.

I stood quite still so startled was I that one would come so near
I stood quite still excited by the sound that spoke of one so near.

Who’s there?…. I called out barely able to breathe barely able to move
Who’s there?… I called once again as I trembled at the thought of another so near.

The door I had so skillfully hid myself behind gently opened by unseen hand
Light flooded in and the fragrant air of a world I had left behind filled me.

My eyes now opened from the long slumber of one who found sanctuary in retreat
As the spell of willing recluse and Hermit’s hand now loosened their hold.

The insistent heartbeat of a human life and all the joys and pleasures it held
Knocked upon those doors that kept me hidden and in response to hope-filled
Query of “Who’s There” I breathe out in exhalation…

I Am! The one who is content, secure and at peace in the world!

What beautifully crafted spaces have you built to keep you at arms length from the world? And, how has it affected your Magick? Next week’s post will continue these thoughts.

The Hebrew Letters and The Qabalistic Tree

The Hebrew alphabet is called the Aleph-Beth and each of 22 letters is assigned to a specific Path on the Tree of Life. Each letter has multiple meanings associated with it and carries the energy of the specific word associated with it. When used in conjunction with the attribute and energy of the Path of connection on which it is placed, there is a greater depth of esoteric knowledge to be gained about the inner keys and workings of that Path.

It should be noted that this is merely an extract of a much larger process of study and should only be considered as a piece of the greater puzzle of a Hermetic system that has its roots in Jewish Mysticism and has stood the test of time in its efficacy and use as a tool of deeper gnosis within the Western Hermetic Mysteries. I encourage you to look at the references at the end of this writing and formulate your own opinions about its fuller application to your own spiritual path. This post will provide some basic information about Kaph and its work on the Path of Opening.

khaf

Kaph is the Hebrew letter placed on the 21st Path connecting the spheres of Chesed and Netzach. Kaph means open hand, or specifically the “palm of the hand” in English. An open hand invites participation. The open hand indicates offering and receptiveness to what is offered or what is to be received. The center point of the hand is the palm. This is where all pools and accumulates in its fullest form and it is from this central space that what was accumulated flows freely out when the hand is opened and flattened. This energy speaks of the receptiveness to work co-creatively and in harmonious collaboration. In divination, the palm of the hand reveals ones destiny and choice is then offered by free will as to what will actually come of that pre-determined fate. This energy moves through this path of creative expression. The anticipated outcome from the influx of flow of each of the connecting spheres would be a product of elevated form. The test lay in what course is chosen as each has desire for its own dominance.

In order to understand the work of Kaph and its path, you need the point of reference of the connecting spheres that lay at either side of this path.

Presentation13

The Sphere of Chesed is also known as Gedulah or the sphere of majestic authority expressed through the refined Power of Love. The love of Chesed is one that has the ability to see well beyond what is ego driven desire and what is the correct alignment of heart infused by Higher Will. Chesed is known as the Mercy. Love and the broad perspective that is all inclusive becomes the merciful action that can justifiably wield its power in a place of Divine authority.

The Sphere of Netzach is the place of establishing the balance of hedonistic and aesthetic ideals. Love is the primary focus, but not at the expense of over indulgence in physical pleasure. This is also the place of expression of Love of Nature in all her forms and the creativity that is called forth to fulfill that task. Netzach is known as the sphere of Victory. The principle of victory here is not one of wanton take-over and infringement of another’s space, but rather victory that is found within the triumph over oneself.

The 21st Path is one of opportunity for grace. The state of grace has many meaning but within this path it is the reflection of the beginning of refinement of self and surroundings to become in alignment with the spiritual aspiration of selflessness and greater perspective. The lens of the camera opens and the world in which we claim our victories is seen for its narrow view. As the lens opens wider the expanse and truth of what we have claimed falls away and the real worth and value of those experiences is revealed as part of a larger whole that encompasses the victories of much more than ourselves. What happens in the stages between as each of the extremes coalesce on central ground determines the outcome of ascent to claim the Higher Self or descent for further refinement and accumulated experience.

The same may be said of the clenched fist that inflicts pain in its expansive thrust or the choice of reaching out with hand open to gently caress and comfort. The energy of Kaph is the choice of remaining in a state of openness. Of trust that all will be well when receptivity is available and also knowing that there are times that call for the harsh fist that crushes what it grasps. This is the ultimate lesson of Victory and Mercy and what measures will be taken towards the balance of each in accord with what is right action.

Each of the Paths of the Tree has the attribution of an element. The 21st Path is one of water. If we think of the properties of water and the image of the open hand the invitation is one of flowing and graceful movement. As we move our hands, currents of energy flow, move in response and are made to be responsive in a variety of ways. The great works of art created by the hand move the emotional waters within the individual.

Kaph is the path of opening. Kaph is the human expression of physical form reaching towards another. Kaph is victory that is birthed from the creative hand that gently holds the fragility of beauty in its palm. Kaph is the mercy that draws to itself ability to preserve life and then release it so it may soar.

I wrote last week about the God Jupiter and his abundance. This week’s post is about the Roman Goddess Juno who, like Jupiter, is expansive and multi-faceted in her attributes and abilities. She was considered the Queen of the Gods and as such was connected to all aspects of life notably those that concerned women. In the broadest sense she was the embodiment of the feminine principle and seen as the protective guardian “spirit” (Juno) of women in the same way the “genius” was attributed to men.

Of the Roman Gods none but Apollo were worshipped more widely or more often appeased when thought to have been provoked to anger. Juno, in her more ancient aspect is often depicted as the jealous and vengeful wife of Jupiter, in his archaic form of philanderer and womanizer. She would stop at no means to attain her ends and was in particular a vital and powerful ally for women regarding matters of marriage and their life cycles. These negative traits gave way in light of her overwhelming devotion to women and their safeguarding and she became a most beloved Goddess to be called upon in all affairs.

Juno was the daughter of Saturn and Rhea and sister (as well as wife) to Jupiter. The Roman Poet, Ovid speaks of Juno as being jealous of the birthing of Minerva from the head of Jupiter and sought the aid of Flora who gave her an herb that enabled the birthing of Mars. Juno’s other children are noted as Vulcan, the God of Fire (and Volcanos) and Juventas, whose name means “youth” and rejuvenation. These became energies associated with Juno as well, having bestowed them on her daughter.

Juno was noted as a Goddess of the “Capitoline Triad” and in this role was known as Juno Regina, or Queen Juno.

” In ancient Roman religion, the Capitoline Triad was a group of three supreme deities who were worshipped in an elaborate temple on Rome’s Capitoline Hill, the Capitolium. Two distinct Capitoline Triads were worshipped at various times in Rome’s history, both originating in ancient traditions predating the Roman Republic. The one most commonly referred to as the “Capitoline Triad” is the more recent of the two, consisting of Jupiter, Juno and Minerva and drawing on Etruscan mythology. The earlier triad, sometimes referred to in modern scholarship as the Archaic Triad, consisted of Jupiter, Mars and Quirinus and was Indo-European in origin. Each triad held a central place in the public religion of Rome during its time.” (1.)

Her epithets were many and were customized in accord with the particular function that was assigned to her. As Queen of the Heavens, Juno was depicted in a chariot drawn by her sacred animal, the Peacock…

“When Juno appeared as the majesty of heaven, with her sceptre and diadem beset with lilies and roses, her chariot was drawn by peacocks, birds sacred to her; for which reason, in her temple at Euboea, the emperor Adrian made her a most magnificent offering of a golden crown, a purple mantle, with an embroidery of silver, describing the marriage of Hercules and Hebe, and a large peacock, whose body was of gold, and his train of most valuable jewels.” (2.)

As the Juno Moneta (she who warns) she guarded over the finances of the empire and had a temple on the Arx (one of two Capitoline hills), close to the Royal Mint. This attribution ensured her place as one of governance over the State and its affairs.

As Juno Lucina she became the Goddess of childbirth. As Juno Sospita (Saviour) she was depicted wearing battle attire, ready to protect the welfare of women and eventually, as her popularity and power grew she became known as the defender and protector of the state. This spoke to both her sovereignty and fertility in maintaining order.

Her Festivals were frequent, especially because of her influence in so many diverse areas of daily life. These became more widespread as her archetypal energy was assimilated as Rome’s cultural impact spread.Known as Fluviona and Februalis, Juno embodied the purification and fertility rites of February in preparation for Spring’s new life. A special ceremony was dedicated to her in the home to celebrate the beginning of each lunar month…

“ The first days of each Roman month, the calends, were sacred to Juno, as was the entire month of June, which is still named for Her. Five cities in Latium (the region of the Latin tribe) also named a month for Her: Aricia, on the Via Appia; Lanuvium, where She was worshipped as Juno Sospita (“Juno the Saviouress”), Praeneste (modern Palestrina), Tibur (modern Tivoli, the resort town of Rome), and Laurentum, located between Lavinium and Ostia on the coast. And as Juno is the Roman Goddess of Marriage, it is no coincidence that June is still considered the proper month for weddings.” 3.

And, Juno’s main festival, the Matronalia was held on March 1st. On this day married woman asked their husbands to give them money to make offerings to the Goddess.

There are many ways to incorporate Juno’s energies into your workings and daily devotionals. Call upon her to rejuvenate your relationships. Call upon her when you need courage and strength in support of a worthy cause. Call on her in childbirth and to ease the monthly cycles of menstruation. Call on her as Queen of the Heavens and welcome her into your home to weave her magick of new beginnings and harmonious relations.
