Spiritual Value

Yesterday I spent the day sharing, teaching and being in the company of some very special people. Each year at this time our Tradition, the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel offers an annual event – Spring Magick.

I have participated in this event for the many years that I have also been part of the ASW Tradition and each year there are new faces blending with those known who want to know and to be more. We are reminded of our importance in this earthly realm and that we are not only a part of this beautiful realm but our value within it is priceless.

My posting this week is one that I wrote in November of last year and seemed most appropriate for this bonus week.  Enjoy!…

Underestimating Your Spiritual Value

What is it that you most desire? What type of motivation do you need to move towards that desire? Is this desire fueled by the subconscious thoughts of what joys it will return to you? Or can you remain fully present in consciousness and awareness of both the negatives and the positives of achieving what you WILL to be so?

That part of our being that we name as the “will” can be a slippery slope to climb and defining will as it aligns with our varied states of consciousness is even trickier and less palpable to discern. We know of the will (small “w’) that fuels our actions and is at times not mindful of the effects of its cause upon whatever it exerts itself upon. We know also of the aspiration of those choosing the spiritual path to cultivate and Divinely inform the larger Will (capital “W’) so that their actions may be in accord with their higher purpose and for the good of all concerned. In and of itself, will is a catalytic and highly combustible energy filled with the potential for the lighting of a controlled blaze or the wanton destruction of a raging blaze spreading uncontrollably like wildfire. And, most often will’s bedfellow is the seductive emotion of desire; the raw and primal wanting we have for a specific and self-created outcome. Desire on its own is the basis upon which creation initiates and calls to itself what is the resultant outcome and is neutral in its pure form and reacting in positive or negative manner depending upon what the goal of the desire may be.

Desire is always part of the magickal equation for bringing into manifestation what we wish to be. And, it is the raw measure of desire that urges forward (or backward) the actions that are needed to move the energy of that desire. Your will or WILL is what steps in and helps to guide the course of what the resultant product is. If fueled by greed, lust or negativity the outcome and the actions taken are not often in accord with what is of the highest good.

If, however, the Higher Will is called into action greed becomes the ability to attract to oneself what is appropriately needed; lust becomes all compassionate love and understanding. And, the balance of negative and positive flow is stabilized within the interface of neutrality so that each may work in harmony with the other in a polarized and productive way.

If we use another analogy; that of the Kundalini awakening or Serpent of Fire, we find that the same interaction of will and desire is needed. Desire awakens the serpent of wisdom who lays coiled at the base of the earthly and primal state. We breathe deeply and call forth our will to merge with this energy. Breath and action fuel and catalyze this energy and stir it into heightened awareness as the dance of enlivened life begins. As the serpent moves along its path of return the One becomes two; separating in individualized awareness of the need for polarity and the deeper gnosis of the duality of our singular state of being. Each moves along its intended course, seducing and drawing the other into its embrace at points of quickening and awakening. The pace quickens and the two return as One in the release of catalytic seed and waters of quickening. The fires of transformed Will reach up towards the Higher Self and the Serpent bites deeply into primed matter releasing the transformative elixirs of deep knowing and spiritual union with the Divine in all of its forms. It is through this conscious effort and application of will to action that dialogue is established and the flames of unified consciousness are quickened.

Our consciousness receives, filters and disburses whatever experience may pass through it. Our normal waking state of consciousness processes the stimuli received as we move through our daily activities and stores away select experiences within the subconscious. The sub-conscious self comes to the foreground in the dream or meditative state, replaying those things held in the memory of its vastness. Eventually we react at a conscious level to those things that lay hidden within our subconscious. Albeit, this reaction is often instinctual and can remain unnoticed indefinitely, there is nonetheless, the feeding of whatever our conscious action may be by what is hidden in the deep still waters of the subconscious that flows beneath.

Shadow work and self analysis address the impact of the sub-conscious and set as their goal the bringing to the surface of conscious awareness those parts of our being that shun the full brightness of the light and resolving or forming alliance with them. We breathe deeply into these waters as the fires of intent and will stir them into action. Air feeds the flame that consumes what lay hidden until the process of transformation is acted upon and the essence of something new may arise carried and uplifted on the breath of Air that once again feeds the flame. If we replace some of these words with their resonance to our spiritual nature, it would read something like this:

Mind fuels and enlivens the will to action which provides the necessary release of those shadow and/or subconscious parts of our being so they may be broken down, reformed and synthesized becoming the Phoenix of Higher Will that aspires towards Higher Mind which is now the informed catalyst (or fuel) that feeds the Higher Will to action.

At the other spectrum lay the super or higher state of consciousness. This level of consciousness is in continual communication with the Divine spark, Deity and our Higher Nature. The Higher or illumined Will resides in this space of awareness and is informed and aligned with outcome that is for the good of all. This Will is informed by Higher Mind and enlivened with compassion fueled by the desire for at-oneness with all things. This informed state of being is crafted from alignment with the subconscious and shadow state and drawn up to the place of integration within the manifest and conscious self which allows an opening to and communion with the Higher and super-conscious Divine Self.

When we make choice to be fully engaged at a conscious level with the actions we take and allow our desires to be in accord with divinely inspired will we create the space of synthesis where our subconscious and super-conscious can interact one upon the other. Breathing into this space and expanding the electrified spark that occurs from this co-mingling allows us to walk a path that is more intent-filled and grounded in the foundation of being fully present as the fires of will take hold. And it is this intention that enables us to will-fully act in a catalytic way that that sends this potent fire upward in offering to our Higher Will and Higher Consciousness.

As above
So below
The snow falls
Silently and
Steadily.

Icy gems of water
Each unique in their
Pattern and design.

Sky opens and cold
Takes shape and form
As the breath of the winds
And all of nature shakes
A frosty hand commanding
Our attention.

For this brief space
Of time all slows
In its usual frantic
Pace and looks
Outward marveling
At the beauty.

Ground of manifest earth
Is garbed in sky’s mystery
And silence falls heavy
And full in its profound
Beauty.

As above
So below
I await the
Outpouring of
Each unique gem
Of space and time
Held in the cold.

I open to the
Profound stillness
And find myself garbed
In the product of
Heaven’s downpour
Each word heard
Each face met
Each teaching found
Unique in its beauty.

I had the opportunity to spend four wonderful days at The Between the Worlds/Sacred Space joint conferences this past week just outside of Baltimore, MD. And, despite the snow and challenging driving conditions we had a full conference of 410 people, all eager to learn, share and grow. And, in thinking about this prompt, I’ve decided to take a decidedly different perspective about what that statement means to me in this present time and space.

As above, so below! These words are filled with potential and that potential is limitless and pervasive when we allow ourselves the freedom to make application of its meaning to everything we encounter mundanely and magickally. Just as the ground accepts the carpeting of its expanse in the blanket of a snowfall, we as manifest beings await the wearing of a new mantle. Remember how as a child you wished for a significant snowfall because that meant a day off from school, sledding, hot chocolate and more. A time to be free and experience the natural world with enthusiasm and joy!

As we get older and inclement weather means challenging travel and potential hardship, we look up to skies and the creamy veil of whiteness just before the first flakes fall is not always a welcome sight. But, regardless of a feeling of dread or excitement, there is a transition of stillness that can be felt by all just at the moment the first uniquely formed snow flake falls. There is an inward breath that becomes the exhaling of all we anticipated for that day’s experience, now changed because nature created in response to moisture and cold.

IMG_0388I looked out from my hotel window and the main road just outside that had just a few hours earlier been a reflection of the gathering momentum that would carry passenger and snowflake towards its destination had stilled in the realms of the below as the above opened pouring down its bounty. This quiet filled the space of the hotel even as traveller’s made their entry coming in softly and in snowy clusters.

IMG_0392

And, as the first words of the opening ritual called forth the Divine to bless the space and the work to be done, the snow had stopped and the silence of a newly colored space outside pulled the energy into itself sending it up towards sky. As the days progressed and the pace of the outside world gathered steam again with cleared roads sunny sky, the pace of the conference also gathered its energy as the reflection of our own light shone brightly in each face, glistening like the the icy prisms of bushy branch.

IMG_0394

By the time the conference ended on Sunday afternoon, what had been brittle and cold was already softening and melting under the heat of clear intention-filled sun light. Much like those who for this space of time entered in silence and mass; each unique in their path and intent. The hard edges that had accompanied at the start and the icy cold that became outer shell of what was warm and vibrant within had yielded to the light of transformation and empowerment. Each person now a blazing sun that was reflection of the changing outer world and its return to Spring’s quickening.

The post this week is an excerpt from my book- A Weekly Reflection. I thought it was an important and timely post for this week. I’ve noticed the crescendo of agitation that many are experiencing and the changes that result as a product of these irritations and disruptions adds a new layer of stress and anxiety.

For me personally these past 15 months have brought so many changes that I can barely name them all. The smaller ones became the foundation from which the larger ones fed and there was many a time that I felt like I was drowning and being pulled down into waters that went so deep that there would never be hope of recovering air. That word “air” was a very subtle key and allowing myself the pause of space to just breathe before encountering the next challenge or making the next decision often brought greater clarity to the decided upon outcome. It was not always an easy outcome, but the control I exerted in “owning” it made all the difference.

And, I suppose one of the most valuable lessons I learned was the very fine balance of knowing how to get out of my way and when to stand strong and firm in what my boundaries were. I believe for most people this is a slow to be learned lesson. We want to feel powerful and in control yet some part of us also just wants to curl up and hide from the inevitabilities of our actions chosen. And, we usually call up the courage of the one when in fact the other is what would produce the better outcome and a change that is lasting and positive in its final product.

My heartfelt wish is that you receive the exact measure of change and respond in the best way to come to a place of strength and beauty in the lessons achieved by seeing the greater opportunity in every change that presents itself.

WEEK 19: Changes

Most of us resist change. Change is something to be feared. The unknown is disquieting and uncomfortable.

The very word itself brings an overwhelming desire to dig in and hold on firmly to whatever is about to change. The irony is that most times after the change has occurred and time has settled in to bring a new perspective, we feel liberated from the old ways that held us inert. The fact of the matter is that change is continually occurring both within and without our being. The cells of our physical bodies shed, regenerate and change daily; transparently and without pain or discomfort. If they did not, our quality of health and life would be impaired.

Our environment changes daily. We encounter different people in different settings hourly. Even what we consider the routine of our job, changes in the scope and intensity that we bring to the task at hand; as well as what the contents of that task are.

Moving with the flow of these changes that are unnoticed, yet prevalent, is what moves us through one day to the next with minimal (if any) discomfort or fear at what lay in wait around the bend. This attitude also allows us to become active observer of what is close at hand that could be used to stabilize and inform us more fully as we proceed. If we see the obstacle ahead we can then shift ever so slightly and avoid being caught unawares and causing damage. The challenge is bringing this level of acceptance to those obvious “changing” moments.

For this week, take note of how you respond to the subtle changes that occur daily. Formulate a plan to respond in the same way to those unexpected changes. Acknowledge each small step that you take that moves you towards this state of change and the feeling that taking control of your circumstances brings to you.

EARTH AS GODDESS

The Goddess – Gaia

Gaia’s Mantle

Starlight and brilliance of
Sun’s solar flare
White and golden red
Woven tapestry of
Jet black Cosmos.

Green and brown
Of fertile land
Blue of sun kissed
Watery basin
Rainbow of color
Spread across
Pattern of cloth
Textured and etched
In crystal and stone.

Blackness of heated striation
Of rock’s core as gentle bud
Pushes upward towards sun’s
Radiant blessing as Gaia sheds
Her skin and dons Spring’s
Celestial mantle of fertility.

Strip away the masks
Strip away the illusions
Strip away the isolation
Strip away the desperation.

Strip away the bright joys
And the sorrow filled
Victories of darkened soul.

Break me down in surrender
Strip away the flesh
And render me further
Still to hollow bone.

I will still have
What connects me to
The conscious whole.

I will always have the
Refined and informed self
I have tested and diligently
Trained on the embattled
Fields of community
And interwoven paths.

Despite all that may
Be taken away I will
Always have the sweet
Memory of my humanity.

This week on The Pagan Experience the suggested topic was Humanity, with these questions looming large:
How do you define “humanity”? What is your contribution to the collective space of humanity? How does your spiritual path support this definition and contributions?

For me the word “humanity” means many things. It is the collective species of humans of which I am a part. And, it is the action of expressing those human qualities in a way that is in alignment with all parts of myself. This second definition is the one that I most often get hung up on.  Finding my humanity in my emotional self means being able to understand how my responses form the base from which I interact (or react to) with others.  Finding my humanity in my actions means accepting the consequences for those actions and than relying on informed decision before proceeding. Finding my humanity in my thoughts requires that I am open and aware of the balance between rationale and logic and creative inspiration. Finding my humanity as I manifest, possess, and leave my physical “human” imprint in the world demands that I honor and respect my physical form, world and state of being as the tool I have been in the lifetime. And, looking at the connectivity of these definitions cycles back to the first definition of the collective species of humans.

This is the greater responsibility of exploring the defining properties of your own humanity. Now, for me this, thins brings to mind another thought.  I see this process of definition intimately connected to the simple (yes, I did use that word in association with the next statement) pursuit of defining your life’s purpose. This is where it gets a bit tricky; although if we were able to continually be in alignment with our higher selves- ALL if this would be a moot point. I like to think of the seeking and self-inquiry that I engage in in revealing my intention ( life’s purpose) in this lifetime is one of contributing to humanity by virtue of my place within it. The more I learn of myself, the more I can identify and resonate with in others. Everyday that I acknowledge my physical self and the gifts of being able to express myself through all of my elements and parts is a deposit into the bank of humanity.

And, to the last question about how my spiritual path supports this. Because I have chosen a path that seeks community and common experience and does its work, even as a solitary practitioner, with the intention and realization that we are interconnected to all life, humanity by default is part of the work of that path. We seek to individualized and yet to also remain cognizant of our place in the collective whole. Our strivings are those of living our spiritual truths 24/7-365 days a year, making those achievements gained the pearls of wisdom that reveal the true nature of our spiritual self.

Humanity flexes its muscles and stretches reaching towards the limits with each act of kindness. And, although many would not agree, I think humanity learns the boundaries of overstep and force in each act of injustice. As humans this is how we learn and grow and although unpleasant in some instances, many times these actions that show humanity at its less than desirable, gives rise to something productive  and uplifting from the depths of adversity.

So, I will hold myself accountable each day for how I chose to express my humanity and offer up gratitude for the experience of being human.

Brighid mirnda gray

Imbolc is just a few weeks away and many use this Sabbat as a celebration of Brighid, the Goddess of Flame and Creativity. This turning of the Greater Wheel moves us towards a place of newness and the quickening of what was brought to light at Yule, the Winter Solstice. We stand at the mid-mark between the act of revealing (Winter Solstice) the fertility that lay dormant from the triple harvest and the action of sowing and planting (Spring Equinox) what we hope will prove viable and grow to its fullest potential. This is the time of quickening and enlivening the hidden seeds of transition and preparation of what will wither and die and what will germinate a become viable product.

Our coven, Oak and Willow of the Assembly of the Sacred Wheel Tradition, uses Imbolc to focus on the Celtic Goddess, Brighid. We craft candles, infusing them with her healing properties. We make oath and re-dedicate to our Coven and Tradition that the quickening of our minds and hearts awaken what can blossom in the months ahead. And, we call upon her creativity to inspire us as we move forward towards the next turn of the Wheel. This year we will call forth the Goddess as Warrior and wielder of the healing sword. The pathworking below is excerpted from:

A Year and a Day on the Wiccan Path
Sabbats- Imbolc

 The Smith’s Blade

Take a few deep breaths and allow your consciousness to settle at the space of the third eye. Turn your attention within and see on this inner landscape a blank screen and allow yourself to be drawn towards it. As you focus on this space you become aware of a small mist of indigo blue energy forming in front and around you. The particles are very small and the energy is both uplifting and relaxing as it encircles you. Take a few deep breaths and step through this veil.

As you emerge, you find yourself standing outside what appears to be a blacksmith’s shoppe. You can hear the rhythmic clanging of a hammer and smell the fires from the forge. It is evening and all is dark around you save for the light glowing from within and shimmering through slats of a wooden building. You step forward towards the open entryway and stand quietly observing a wiry built man bent over and working deftly as the glimmer of unpolished metal flashes.

Repetitively and with great precision, he places the unshaped metal into the forge, heating it and then pulling it out to the edge of the table, gently hammering it into the desired shape or at times simply allowing the red glow to cool before it is placed once again in the hot flames. This occurs for several times and with each heating and hammering, the metal takes on more of the shape of the blade.

He looks carefully at what has been crafted and satisfied that this process is finished, he gently wraps the blade and places it aside allowing it to cool completely. He pulls from the space in which he placed the cooling blade another wrapped item and as he unwraps it you see that this is a blade that had been crafted a day earlier.

He steps over to the grinder and begins to sharpen and finely hone the edges and point of the blade. You notice that this blade seems to glow and has a certain shine to it already, although it is not polished. You feel drawn to it, but remain standing in the doorway, hoping that you will remain unnoticed. He looks carefully at the edges and then plunges the sword into the heat of the flaming forge. Quickly the glowing red blade is retrieved and plunged into a water bath to speed the cooling and hardening process. Again the blade is tempered by heat and water and you think on the process of emotion and will and the need for the correct balance of each to be in place to make for supple yet strong action and purposeful will.

You see the Smith smiling as he lifts the blade upwards, knowingly and assured that it will have a certain amount of flexibility yet still retain its sharp edge. Now the sword is ready for completion. He selects the necessary parts of pommel, guard and hilt and with skill assembles all precisely and artistically. The sword is now complete and he lifts his gaze, staring directly at you, beckoning you to come towards him.

You are ready to speak, but he lifts a finger to his lips indicating for you to be silent and to follow behind him as he brushes past you. He steps outside and you turn towards him, both of you facing a sky that is now colored with the rising of the morning sun. He lifts the blade upward and it shines brightly as the first fiery rays of sunlight stream across it. The brilliance of its reflection expands and for a moment you close your eyes, the intensity is so great. You open them and see that the blacksmith is gone and hovering mid-air the sword glows red and pulses with heat that seems to course through you. The flaming glow fills the space and from its center the blade elongates and transforms into a woman of great beauty and flaming red hair. Her eyes glow like sunlit embers of flame and you bow in homage to the Goddess, Brighid. As she approaches you feel the power and strength of Her presence. You see that she carries the sword that you witnessed being crafted and you feel a gentleness about Her that offers you comfort as to how this Divine sword might be used. She has come as the healing sword to offer her many gifts if you ready for her transformative energy.

You approach and kneeling before her you speak of what needs healing and transformation. Each word spiraling up and out like wisps of smoke heated and released by her power. You surrender to her all your doubts and fears and one by one each is dissected and removed from your being leaving you feeling light and unencumbered. When you have finished offering all that has troubled you, she bids you to look upwards and as she lifts her fiery blade warm droplets of healing water shower down about you. Compassion and warmth envelope you and you are held in the embrace of the Goddess as she quickens and enlivens you. Rest in this state for as long as is needed.

When you have received all that is needed at this time, you gently rise and offer up gratitude to the Goddess for the blessings she has given. As these thankful thoughts quicken in your mind and move easily from your lips, you begin to step backwards, as flames begin to rise where Brighid was standing. They reach upwards like strands of red hair caught in a breeze and give the appearance of flickering with shades of emerald green and flashes of silvery metal. You stand taking in the beauty of the sight and the warmth of its heat and the knowledge that you have been transformed by the Goddess, Herself.

The flames gently dwindle and fade and in their place is the smith holding the sword of the Goddess. He walks towards you and gently places it in your hand, softly telling you that it had been crafted for you. He tells you that the gift of the healing sword is given to those who will use it wisely and courageously. And, that the Goddess who offers this gift is always near at hand, ready to inspire and offer her healing so that you may thrive and grow as Her Divine Child.

You take a deep breath in and close your eyes, holding the sword tightly to your breast and as you exhale and open your eyes, you see that your awareness has returned to that of observing the blank inner screen of your consciousness. You take a few deep breaths in and with each exhalation your awareness settles back into the space of your physical being and space surrounding you. You gently flutter your eyes open and look around at your surroundings with keener sight and the knowledge that you carry the healing blade within.

So Mote It Be!

I’ve written many articles on Spiritual Practice; its benefits, creating and personalizing and so on. So, when this topic came up again, I realized that I have been doing things a bit differently for a while now as far as what my personal practice has BECOME.

When I have thought in the past about what constitutes my personal practice, the usual list of methods and tools came to the foreground. Staples such as meditation, energy protocol, spell work, Esbats, devotionals, Sabbats, etc… all have been prominent in my craft and have carried and sustained me to the place I am along that path now. One of the tools I did not consider in that mix was my writing. That is until now.

I work full time, have a family, High Priestess a coven and write! I write daily and at times a good portion of my lunch, early morning or late evening hours are spent writing. At times this writing and the self-imposed deadlines have eclipsed the time for engaging in my “personal practice” and I have duly reprimanded myself for not making time for meditation, personal Sabbats, and such.

Instead, I have chosen to experience them through my writing and various blogs that were finely tuned to be attuned to these cycles; although at the time I did not realize the writing to fill these blogs was the practice I was cultivating. As I dug deeper into disciplining myself to write about various topics in a variety of styles, I realized that this was a practice unto itself. I formalized this writing in a ritual of personal dedication to become a conduit for information to flow and shared experience of what I have learned along the way. And, in this sacred space, I put to paper some of the first writings that would evolve into a daily practice of many.

Now, I see that the writing has opened me in ways that I would not have imagined. It is a way of projecting the experience I am writing about into the world as bits of energy to draw from. It is a way of connection to the Divine as words flow and ideas take creative form. It is a way of re-membering and re-telling those memories as they evolve into what may be used in practical form in this life’s experience. It is the action of contemplative/meditative, energetic and spell weaving using words, hands, mind, heart and the will to write.

So, for now if asked what is my personal practice I would say writing!

The Kybalion
By The Three Initiates
The Yogi Publication Society Masonic Temple
Chicago, Illinois. 1912

We continue our reading of The Kybalion and explore the principles of Rhythm and Causation. Rhythm is our constant companion as we move along the course of our making and create the existence we wish to attract. Causation is the container of receipt and return that demands we be ever mindful of our actions and the consequences that ensue. It is the great rule maker that shapes our destiny as we go about our work of checks and balances at every turn.

Pagan Experince

I have enjoyed reading many of the blog posts of followers and those from the other writing communities that I have participated in. The Pagan Blog Project has been the stimulus for most of my Friday posts for the past three years and today marks the last post for this community. Jess Carlson has been wonderful as organizer of the weekly posts, providing the prompts and reminders.

When the announcement was made a few weeks ago that Pagan Bog Project 2014 would be the last year of run, I thought about how this project has served as an opportunity to gain a broader perspective of the pagan community and those things that inspire the individuals part of it. And, so The Pagan Experience was born.

Join me Monday, January 5th for the first of Monday Musings-2015. The plan is to build a writing community of weekly links for sharing from fellow writers and spiritual seekers. Each week there will be a suggested theme; although feel free to be creative!
