The Gods of Samhain

Every culture has stories of those beings who rule the land of the Dead. These rulers may be Gods, Goddesses, Kings, Queens, Spirits or in some case mortals who achieve god-like status. Entrance into these realms often requires more than simply physical death of the individual with trials and tests proving worth of entry being the standard. What that land/realm is called varies depending on the pantheon’s associated with that culture, but the concept of separate realms for the living and the dead remains consistent.

Most often we think of the Goddess in her form as Crone being associated with the Sabbat (Solar Holiday) of Samhain. But, the Dark God is also one of polarized energy that stands as Lord of the Underworld and keeper of the dark mysteries. Today, we are going to meet a few of those Gods. The (basic) Astrology of Samhain

The astrological imprint of Samhain is one of an energy of mystery, intuitive gifts, secrets, passion and more. The solar month of Scorpio holds the space for the parting of the veils and the celebration of Samhain on either date, October 31st or November 6-7th. Scorpio is a Water sign of the Fixed modality, and is also the only astrological sign that has three (3) levels of experience available to it. All of these attributes very juicy for the hallows of Samhain.

The traditional assignation of the Scorpion to Scorpio as its image is only one of the three forms this sign may take. This time of the year, more than any other, is steeped in celebration of the occult. Occult in this sense meaning that which is hidden – although I would add, in plain sight. Spirits, witches, supernatural creatures and being mindful of the convergence of the ancestor’s realm and the living come to life in a tableau that is magickal, mundane and commercial. The penultimate day is October 31st. and the celebration of Halloween, or Samhain as it is commonly known as a spiritual observance.

The name Samhain (pronounced: SAH-win/SOW-in/SAH-wen) is derived from a Gaelic celebration that marked the final harvest. The celebration heralded Winter and the imminent darkness and often lack of stores if the harvest had not been as productive as possible. Food is one of the first experiences we have as we enter this world. The closeness that evolves from the child suckling at mother’s breast; first solid foods and explorations; favorite foods served on special occasions and a meal lovingly prepared that nourishes both body and soul. This is the magick of food and the deep memories that food awakens.

Most of the time I enjoy cooking and becoming empty nesters when our five children left home several years ago still has not dampened my enthusiasm in cooking smaller meals for my husband and myself. Adding a little variety to developing my cooking skills comes from having to prepare meals that are both vegetarian (for myself) and carnivore traditional (for my husband).

The Fall weather brings a respite from the heat and visually is a feast for the eyes as leaves turn color. This issue is chock-full of beautiful leaves that will soon fall from the trees and become the compost that feeds what will blossom next year.

September is typically marked by a return to school, learning and the opportunity to blossom in another way. The theme we have chosen is one of Deeper Learning. Many are primed and focused on this upcoming Eclipse and much has already been written about it. The Moon waxed full today at 2:11p.m. in the Airy astrological sign of Aquarius. Additionally a lunar eclipse is in the works as the Moon passes behind the Earth in its orbit leaving earth center point between it and the Sun.

For most, today’s events pale in comparison to the hype surrounding the upcoming Total Solar Eclipse during the New Moon phase on August 21st. Nonetheless, you have to start at point A to reach point B. So, here we are cloaked in the fullness of a Moon that is visionary and strives towards the highest good for all.
